Yesterday, I put up pictures of Maisie’s brother, Leo. If you didn’t see them, click here. Maisie is my grand niece – my nephew’s daughter, also my late brother Sam’s granddaughter. And she is as sweet as sweet can be!

OK, I admit, I put her up to this pose above – she was very well behaved and patient with me during the shoot. This is one amazing 5-year-old.

And, as you can see, she can do serious as well. These pictures were taken just with window light. I can’t wait to see you again, dear Maisie!

My Grand Nephew Leo

Recently I had the pleasure of visiting with some family members in Maine. This young fellow is my grand nephew, Leo, age 3. I had to look up in Wikipedia what you call your nephew’s son and – yes – the answer is grand nephew.

Leo is three years old  and he is a grand fellow indeed. What a joy it was to spend three days with him. These pictures were taken in the late afternoon on a cloudy day, so the light is soft and subtle and the colors are quite muted.

For those of you who are technically inclined, I shot these images with the lens pretty wide open – F5. So, the depth of field is very narrow – in some cases just one eye is in focus. Shooting at this aperture blurs out the background – just what we wanted to do.

Stay tuned for pictures later this week of Leo’s sister, Maisie – a grand niece if ever there was one!

A Friend For 60 Years

Michael has been a friend for over 60 years, actually. We grew up together in North Carolina, lost touch for many years, and have just reconnected in the past few months. We’ve taken very different life paths, and yet we’ve picked up our friendship, in some ways, just where we left off as 12 year old boys.

We recently got together in Maine. These pictures were taken at Michael’s house, just with window light.

There’s an old saying in photography – a good photograph is like a good joke – it doesn’t need explaining. So, I won’t explain this black and white image, but I would like to explain how I responded to it. At first, I was ready to crop in on both sides quite a bit. But when I noticed the bright window on the left and the dark room fading away on the right, I decided to keep these elements in. Michael has had some very dark times in his life – we all have. But he’s experienced a lot of joy as well. And I believe that, even in those dark places, there is a bit of light that is going to shine through, somehow and sometime. And indeed we see light coming into that dark room down the hall.

To be sure, when the shutter clicked, I was certainly not thinking about any of this. But I’m finding in my portrait work that serendipitous things happen. Who knows why?

Michael looks serious and contemplative in these pictures.  But rest assured he has a great sense of humor, a terrific laugh and an infectious smile. We’ll try to capture that side of him next time. Thanks for being my friend, good buddy.
