Pencil Sketch Portrait

A few week ago, I took this portrait of Melanie, as part of a studio shoot. This weekend, I learned a new photo editing technique, which converts a photograph into a pencil sketch – or an image that looks like a pencil sketch.

For those of you familiar with Photoshop, this process involves, in part, 1) a blend mode of Divide, 2) Gausian Blur, 3) converting for Smart Filters, 4) running the poster edge filter in the artistic filter gallery, and 5) another blend mode change to Linear Burn. Whew!

To see how this looks up close, here’s a detail of the “pencil sketch”  below.  I’m excited to do more of these sketch portraits – no pencils required!

When You Can’t Quite Get Two Smiles

Recently, I had the pleasure of photographing these terrific guys, Ben (age 3) and Zach (14 months). We got some good shots of each of them, but struggled to get a good image of the two together. On this particular day, these boys were, well, let’s just say – pretty lively.

In the picture above, Ben looked fine, but Zach wasn’t at his best. The eye injury, one of the little mishaps of the day, could have been fixed in Photoshop, but not his facial expression.

But I did catch this good smile of Zach by himself. So, Photoshop to the rescue! I cut Zach out of this picture and pasted him into the other image with his brother. The composited photograph appears below, with the eye injury magically healed as well.  It takes some time to achieve a natural look with these cut-and-paste pictures – about 2 hours in this case.

Mom liked the results – she wrote: “Amazing! You nailed it!” The family holiday card is ready to roll.
