Russia through Another Lens

OK, my title today is a bit deceptive. I really just wanted to get you to have a look! Russia has been in the news a lot lately and Mr. Putin – and by extension his whole country – have mostly been demonized by the U.S. press. It’s beyond the scope of my humble photography blog to voice an opinion about international demons. But I can say that most of the Russian people I’ve met are friendly, engaging and a joy to spend time with. Anastasia, pictured here, is a prime example!

Anastasia came to the U.S. about eight years ago. She grew up in an area near Sochi and attended and graduated from a college in Moscow. In this country, she’s worked as a fashion model and also earned an advanced degree in business. Anastasia is actively seeking a job in the business world and wants to build a life here in the U.S.

We did a photoshoot in the studio recently, working in a variety of concepts. This post has a few of the beauty/glamour headshots from that day.

Thanks, Anastasia, for a wonderful shoot. I wish you all the best, wherever your life might take you.

Recently I had a fashion shoot with Nicole in the studio.  Nicky is an aspiring model I’ve had the pleasure of working with several times. In this shoot, we tried out a variety of new lighting ideas.

In the picture above, we had one small light in a grid just behind Nicky, and another small harsh light in front of her, to the left of the camera. The effect is close to a cinematic or stage lighting esthetic.

Several of the images translated well to black and white. In this image, the wardrobe and the background were monochromatic to start with. The black and white conversion can add a classic element to a portrait or fashion photograph.

Thanks, Nicky, for a fun and productive shoot!

Eyes Up!

In most of my headshots and portraits, I’ll ask the person to look straight into the camera lens. This encourages engagement of the viewer of the photograph. We can look at the picture and have a sense that the subject is looking back at us and connecting with us is some way.

But there many other approaches to the eyes. In a recent studio shoot with Sandra, an aspiring model, I asked her in this image to look up at the ceiling, directly over the camera. This opened up and showed off her beautiful eyes. Also, when a person looks up, there can be an unconscious message of hope, optimism, looking into the future – or all three. Especially with Sandra’s natural smile, there is a positive vibe about the photograph. And, as viewers, even though Sandra is not looking directly at the lens, we can relate to her and imagine what she’s thinking and feeling.

How do you react to this picture? I’d love to hear from you – either by email or a post to the blog.
