“Behind the Scenes” at a Fashion Shoot

Last Friday was a really fun day at the studio! We were shooting a “behind the scenes” video of a fashion photoshoot. The model was my good friend, Amelia Huckel-Bauer, a NYC-based actor and model, with whom I have worked several times before.

Maria Dominici, a makeup artist, and David Distasio, a hair stylist, were part of the terrific team for the day. I’ve worked many times with Maria – you’ll see of lot of her work in my images – but it was the first time collaborating with David – the first of many, I hope.

The videographer was Matt Shea, of Matt of All Media. I’d seen a few videos produced for other photographers of “behind the scenes” at photoshoots that we took some inspiration from. Matt and I planned out pretty carefully what we wanted to accomplish for the day but stayed open to spontaneous creative ideas.  Matt actually shot all of the video using one of my cameras, the NIkon D800, which gave us some special effects we wanted.

These are a few of my still images of the day. We haven’t settled yet on which images will go into the video. Here’s Matt shooting Amelia, below.

I don’t want to say too much about the video – you’ll have to wait (along with me!) to see how it turns out. But this was a fabulous experience for me to work with an amazing professional team. Many thanks to all of you! We’ll post the video when it’s released –  Stay tuned!

Using Special Effects Filters

In a shoot last week with my friend, Tori, we did some old Hollywood-style headshots, with dramatic lighting, The image above worked well, but I’m always trying to consider alternative ways to edit an picture. So I tried a tighter crop, aiming for a higher impact and more engagement with the viewer.

From this tighter crop, I thought about other ways to treat the image. Recently, I’ve been experimenting with some amazing filters from Nik Software. The one below, from Nik Color Efex Pro 4, is called “vintage film.”

Which of the three images do you like best? I’d love to hear from you!

Recent Model Shoot

Today I’m posting a couple of images from a recent shoot with Nicky, a college student and aspiring model, with whom I’ve worked several times. Joanna Kirchon did the lovely makeup for these pictures.

In both of these images, I’m trying some new ideas on backgrounds. In the image above, we shot on a white background. I laid in the red/pink in a Photoshop “plug-in” program called Nik Color Efex Pro. The idea was to complement the color of the lips.

In the second image, we also shot on a white background. I laid in the background picture, which is actually a stock photo I purchased. Lots of editing to try to get the two images to fit together believably.

Thank you, Nicky and Joanna for a great shoot!
