Gentle Reader – it’s been too long since you’ve heard from me! My only excuse is that we have spent the last few months selling our Connecticut home, and buying and moving into our new home on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. We are pretty well settled and now I’m earnestly back shooting again!

Please click on each of these images to see them in a larger and clearer size.

In our big entrance hall/dining room, we have four floor-to-ceiling windows and I wanted to make three photographs to go on the walls in between the windows. These are the images I created. I wish I could say I found all these shells on the beach but I bought them at a local shell store – most are not native to South Carolina.

I photographed these with two Nikon Speedlights with umbrellas, for fairly flat lighting. The prints are 16 inches square and will be about 24 or 25 inches with the frames.

As always, your comments and questions are welcome.

Working in a home studio and also on location, photographer Blake Robinson serves Hilton Head Island, Bluffton and the other communities of Beaufort County, South Carolina.

Dog Days at the Beach

The dog days, with summer winding down – a good time to visit the beach. These images were taken at Pear Tree Point Beach in Darien, Connecticut.

So, there’s always this question – do you ask someone’s permission to take their picture or just grab it surreptitiously?  With the lifeguard, who was a pretty cool dude, I wanted to get right under his stand, so I asked him and then told him to ignore me, which he did.

This girl was pretty wrapped up in her music – I didn’t ask. I shot from over 100 feet away with a long telephoto lens.

By the way, be sure to click on each image to see it in a LARGER and clearer view.

I definitely asked this little girl and her grandma as well if I could photograph her. She was mostly interested in her ice cream, but she engaged with me for quite a few shots.

Have you ever noticed how little kids – who normally get bored easily – can happily play for hours on end at the beach?

My last image, below, was not at the beach, but was taken at Rowayton Harbor.  “Mom” helped set this shot up by throwing a tennis ball into the water a few times.

Ah, the dog days…
