Window Light – and more!

Last week I shot in the studio for a second time with my friend, Katie. Some of the images were with window light, such as the first photograph, above. By the way, click on any image to see it LARGER and clearer.  Window light can be beautiful – and has a quality that just can’t be reproduced with artificial lights.

In this closeup shot, I asked Katie to look right into one of the studio lights. I used a very narrow depth of field. Note that her left eye (right as we view it) and her lips are in sharp focus but most of the rest of the image is soft.  This matches our perception when we look at someone – often our focus/attention is just on parts of a face.

This photograph is shot in a typical fashion lighting setup, with pretty even lighting all around, but with the main light coming from the right.

With some of the images, I converted to black and white.  In this one, we have nice, soft window light coming from the left side.

Katie is a joy to work with – I told her we make a great team!

Professional photographers have their pictures stolen at an alarming rate. And it’s virtually impossible to protect any photographs that are posted online.  So I’m surprised when someone asks permission to use one of my images. But it does happen – this is the third time a company from Europe has asked for a photograph of mine.

Some years ago I took photos for a hand model. A design firm in The Netherlands, Clever Franke, found my image online and asked if they could use it in their own marketing. We agreed on a price for a license fee to use the image and the firm paid me through PayPal.

A big “hand” of thanks to Clever Franke for their honesty! My original image appears below.

In a recent shoot with my friend, Florena, we did some pictures with this gorgeous black dress. By the way, if you missed my earlier blog post with beauty images of Flo, please click here.

We used a fan in this picture – you can see a bit of movement in the bottom of the dress. Also, Flo’s hair was blown out slightly by the fan.

Flo smiles naturally; she’s a genuinely happy woman. So it was a challenge for her to put on a serious or contemplative look, which is out of character for her! But we got a good look in this image. See the color version above and the black and white image below. Faithful readers will recall I often try to work hands into my my portraits.

Thanks, again, Flo for a terrific shoot! Stay tuned, gentle reader, for one more blog post coming in the next few days, with Flo wearing casual outfits.
