Recently I had a fashion shoot with Nicole in the studio.  Nicky is an aspiring model I’ve had the pleasure of working with several times. In this shoot, we tried out a variety of new lighting ideas.

In the picture above, we had one small light in a grid just behind Nicky, and another small harsh light in front of her, to the left of the camera. The effect is close to a cinematic or stage lighting esthetic.

Several of the images translated well to black and white. In this image, the wardrobe and the background were monochromatic to start with. The black and white conversion can add a classic element to a portrait or fashion photograph.

Thanks, Nicky, for a fun and productive shoot!

Fitness Modeling

Last week, I did a photoshoot with Amelia, an experienced NYC-based actress and model, who needed fitness images for her agency.

(As a new feature of my blog, you can click on any of the images to see them appear in a larger size.)

We followed the traditional style of fitness images – clean and dramatic colors and flattering lighting that shows off the model’s figure.

In addition to using workout clothes, we did a few images in lingerie. These are not strictly fitness images, but could be used by the agency to present Amelia to potential advertising clients.

Faithful readers will recognize Capture0010-5-Edit-sRGB-950px-2Amelia from some earlier blog posts. This was my fourth shoot with her.

Amelia is a joy to work with and I hope these photographs will help her land some terrific new modeling and/or acting gigs.

Amelia  also starred in a video we made about a year ago. If you haven’t seen it, please have a look, below.

Photoshoot with Maddy

Capture0052-2-blog-Edit

Last week, I had the pleasure of shooting in the studio with Maddy, an aspiring teenaged model. The long-scheduled shoot was set for January 2, but a big winter storm was expected in the afternoon and Maddy and her mom were coming from over an hour’s drive away. So we decided to start early in the morning, worked hard, finished by noon and were able to get them home before the big snowfall hit. Where there’s a will, there’s a way!

Faithful readers will recognize my “beauty” lighting setup in the image above. We had two bright lights bouncing off the paper backdrop and you can see some of that light wrapping around the sides of Maddy’s hair and face. A third light, a beauty dish, was centered just over the camera, aimed down at a 45 degree angle. Finally, I had a reflector just below the frame to bounce a bit of light back into her face. If you look carefully at the eyes, you’ll see the bright catchlights of the beauty dish in the upper part of each eye, and more subtle reflections of the reflector in the bottom of each eye.  The eyes can often reveal how an image is lit.

Faithful readers will also remember I often try to get hands into portraits. Maddy has beautiful hands (and was wearing fun fake nails), so we worked them into many of our pictures.

Thanks, Maddy, for a great shoot. You are a joy to work with. And thanks to your mom, Pam, for all her terrific help as a photo assistant!
