Ballerina!

Last week, I had the pleasure of shooting again with my friend, Wilhelmina, a very accomplished ballet dancer and college freshman. (I read “freshperson” in a novel last night – is that really a word?)

In the images above, we just used one light, fairly harsh, for a more dramatic look. Usually in the studio we are trying to avoid any shadows, but in these images it’s part of the design. With Wilhelmina up on the balls of her feet, notice how the shadow starts sharp below her feet and becomes softer on the paper “wall” behind her. Another “shadow” shot below:

It’s great fun for me to photograph dancers – either on stage in a theater on in the studio.  Many thanks to Wilhelmina and her mom Cynthia, who assisted on the shoot, for working with me on creating these images. As always, your comments and reactions are most welcome.

Dance Show!

Last weekend, The Darien Arts Center put on a wonderful Dance Review. I had the privilege of taking pictures at the dress rehearsal the evening before opening night. This is an amazing company of youth and adult dancers whose enthusiasm for their craft is boundless – and terrific fun to watch.

Taking pictures in a theatre setting is really difficult. There’s just not enough light. A photographer has to push the limits of shutter speed, aperture and ISO.  Fast moving dancers add to the challenge. I cheated a little bit in this shoot – I know the lighting guys and asked them to goose up the lights for me for a few seconds during each of the numbers. This helped some.

A studio shooter gets spoiled – the light and the background are absolutely controllable and your subject generally stays still.  In this show, I’d watched an earlier rehearsal, so I had some sense of anticipating the action. Still, things move fast – the dancers and the lights. One of my photographer friends suggested if you can get one or two keepers out of ten, you’re doing well.

Congratulations to all the dancers in this high energy, fun performance. I love shooting dance and hope to be back next year!

Dancer Bridge

At the monthly meetings of my photography club, whose initials are the tongue-twisting PCLFC,  we have  competitions, with three judges scoring and critiquing the images. One of the competitions is on an assigned subject. The topic this week was “Bridges.”  Well, I didn’t have a good bridge picture. But then I remembered one image from a recent shoot with my young ballet dancer friend, Wilhelmina,  that might stretch (no pun intended) to fit the theme. “Bridge Dancer,” pictured above, got a second place score from the judges.

If you missed my earlier blog post with images of Wilhelmina, she is pictured here in more traditional dance poses.
