Bordeaux Wine Country

We’re just back from three weeks in Europe – a whirlwind through England, France, Portugal and Spain. We spent two days in the area of Bordeaux.

OK, I’m embarrassed to say I’ve forgotten the name of this very famous chateau. I’m sure one of you will remind me! The chateau was closed – we just had a chance to photograph it from the road. I imagined a damsel in distress calling out to us from one of the towers.

We did visit an amazing wine property in St. Estephe, Chateau Phelan Segur.

This is part of the exterior of the beautifully maintained chateau. Pictured below is the view from the main building out towards the Geronne River. Chateau Phelan Segur owns all the land down to the river’s edge.

Here’s the chateau label. We were fortunate enough to taste several of their recent vintages – all delicious, even at 10am in the morning.

We visited the chateau on September 15th. In most years, they’d be getting ready for the harvest, but this year, because of unusual summer weather, the grapes will be harvested in mid-October. We tried a few grapes off the vine – very tasty! Notice the rocky soil – part of what makes Bordeaux wines so special.

After a hard morning (not really!) touring, we had a lovely lunch in the town of Bordeaux, at this hotel, with its quintessentially French facade.

More pictures to follow from our trip.

I can almost taste the wine. Nice photographs, Blake.
